FAQS on Contact Less Cards

1. What is contactless Card?

Contactless card is like a normal chip card with an inbuilt radio frequency antenna. You can make payment yourself just by tapping the card on the terminal within 4 cm distance, without handing over the card to the shopkeeper.

2. Where and how can I make contactless payments?

Anywhere you see the contactless symbol Contactless Symbol at checkout, you can simply tap to pay and get receipt on successful payment. You can use this facility in Restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores, pharmacies, stadiums, and any other location you find such terminal.

3. 3. What to do, if the terminal is not enabled for contactless cards?

The same card can be used for making payment by dipping/swiping the card with PIN authentication.

4. Is there a daily limit on the amount of purchases done using contactless cards?

Yes, as per RBI guidelines a maximum amount of Rs.5000/- per transaction will be permitted. You can make 5 contactless transactions continuously and the 6th one necessarily be a PIN authenticated contact transaction.  For any transactions above Rs.5000/-, must be necessarily done as contact transaction with PIN.

5. Can I use the card for ATM/Ecom/PoS transactions?

Yes, apart from using in Tap & Go mode, you can also use the card for ATM/Ecom/PoS transactions with PIN.

6. Whether any accidental debits will be made by walking past a contactless terminal?

No. Contactless machines and cards have a limited range. Your card needs to be within 4cms from the machine to be read and transaction to be initiated from the reader to initiate a transaction.

7. What to do if I lost my contactless card?

Your contactless card should be kept safe since it can be used without PIN. Immediately block your card using various options given by the bank.

8. Whether I need to use Contactless mode only for all payments upto Rs.5000/- in a terminal enabled for contactless transaction.?

It is not compulsory to use the contactless mode for all payments upto Rs.5000/-. If you want to perform, only Contact transaction authenticated with PIN, it can be done at your option. Contactless feature is introduced to enable cardholders to make small payments quickly without any need to part with the card.

9. Whether I have the option of Disabling the Contactless option and enabling it as and when I like?

IOB contactless Cardholders are exclusively provided with an option of Enabling /Disabling the Contactless feature of the Card by taking up with Account Holding Branch or through Net Banking/Mobile banking.

FAQs on National Common Mobility Card

1. What is NCMC (National Common Mobility Card) Card?

NCMC Card has been conceptualized by government of India, as an easy and convenient payment instrument, which can be used across Public Transport (Bus, Metro etc.) and can be used for retail payments also.

2. What is the difference between a Normal Debit Card and NCMC Card?

This card has all the features of a normal contact as well as Contactless Debit Card but additionally a unique stored value feature has been built in to make digital payments in off-line mode thus making it a solution of choice for Public Transport and small retail shop.

3. What is a Wallet in NCMC Card?

Wallet is a virtual allocation within the EMV Chip of the Card to store the balance of permitted amount that can be transferred from the attached SB/CD account to make Off-line payments in Public Transport like Metro Rail & Buses, Toll Plaza etc.

4. How can I load or Top up money in my Wallet?

Money can be Added to the Wallet either in Internet Banking NCMC top up facility or in the form of Cash or by debit to the account by using the NCMC Debit Card.

5. When the amount will be loaded in my Wallet?

The amount added via Internet Banking will be added to the Wallet and available once the Balance updation transaction is done at RuPay qSparc Certified NCMC compatible Terminals (PoS).

6. What is maximum amount I can load or Top up in my Wallet?

As the transactions performed through off-line mode are getting deducted from the wallet immediately and the Bank will come to know about the transactions only the next day when settlement files reach them from the Acquiring Terminals, we have fixed the maximum amount that can be made available in the wallet at any point of time as Rs.2000/-.

7. Whether I can load money through my Net Banking or Mobile Banking etc.?

Money can be loaded/top up to the offline wallet through net Banking. Through Mobile Banking, the facility is not made available now.

8. How I can check the Balance in my Wallet any point of time?

The Balance is stored in the Chip of the Card only, the current balance in Wallet can be viewed by the Cardholder in any of the RuPay qSparc Certified NCMC compatible Terminals (PoS).

9. Is there any additional usage for this Card?

The NCMC card supports dedicated storage areas (Service Compartments) for Merchants/Operators (Max 20 Service IDs can be created). Separate balances can be kept with individual merchants also, but Bank is not at all connected as far as amount loaded into the specific Service Area of the Merchant and it is between the Cardholder and the concerned Merchant only.

10. What is the difference between a Contactless online transaction and Contactless Off-line transactions?

Contact transaction (online only):

Here, the Card is swiped or dipped in the PoS Device / Terminal and the Cardholder has to input the PIN to complete the transaction successfully. This kind of Contact online transactions can be performed for any amount which is permitted by the concerned Bank for PoS Transactions depending on the Card Variant. Each transaction will be successful only if it is approved by the Bank.

Contactless Online:

Here, instead of Card being handed over to the Shopkeeper for swiping or dipping, the Cardholder himself can tap the Card on the Device/ PoS Terminal within a distance of 4cms to complete the transactions. The major difference between Contact less and contact online transactions is PIN authentication by Cardholder. Under contactless transactions, since pin is not provided by the Card holder, as per RBI guidelines, it can be done only for per transaction limit upto Rs.5000/- only. Any payment exceeding Rs.5000/- has to necessarily be a PIN authenticated contact transaction only. Even for transactions within Rs.5000/- only 5 contactless transactions are permitted continuously, and 6th transaction should be a contact transaction.

Contactless Offline:

Contactless off-line transactions are permitted for small value transactions like Metros, Bus transports, Toll Plaza, other small retail payments through the NCMC supported terminals only. The money will be directly debited to the balance from the wallet and no prior approval of the Bank is necessary for this. At the end of the day the list of such transactions happened in the wallet will be sent to the bank for accounting purpose only. Here, there is no need for any PIN and transactions are done by tapping the card only. Money that can be kept in the wallet is Rs. 2000/- only.

1. What will happen to the money loaded in the Wallet, if the NCMC Card is lost?

In case the NCMC Card is lost, the customer should immediately Block the Card by contacting the Branch or by using existing options available through website, Net Banking, Mobile Banking, By calling Toll-Free Number, or by calling the ATM Help Desk.

If Card is blocked successfully, then both Contact and Contactless online transactions will be blocked from the time of effective blocking of the Card. However, before the card is blocked, Contactless online transaction and offline transactions cannot be prevented. Even after, blocking the Card, Contactless offline transaction through wallet cannot be ruled out as balance stored in the Card Wallet cannot be blocked until the card is used in a contact mode.

2. What is the remedy available for failed transaction through contactless online/offline mode?

For both contact and Contactless online & offline transactions, Dispute redressal mechanism is applicable like any other regular debit cards.

3. How to know your NCMC wallet account number?

The NCMC wallet account number is the last 15 digits of the first time issued NCMC enabled card number. This NCMC wallet account number remains the same, irrespective of card replacement/upgradation/renewal NCMC card.

4. What is the use of NCMC wallet account number?

Though the NCMC wallet account number is neither used for customer nor for branches, but this account number is virtual account required for reconciliation purposes.

5. What is Service Id?

Service ID is a virtual ID created for a particular type of service. Service type is like Transport, Hotels, Entertainment, Hospitals etc. Maximum 20 service id can be created depending on the service type. However, the service ids created is no use for the end user, it is only for the internal purpose. Money loaded will affect the wallet in a whole. Transaction will be reflected in the wallet only.

Steps to be followed to avail the benefits of NCMC wallet:

For Branches-

  • Please make sure, the customer is having RuPay NCMC Debit Card enabled with Contactless and offline wallet channel.
  • If a customer is not having Debit Card enabled with NCMC, then from branch the request may be placed for New Debit Card enabled with NCMC. While applying the card request, it is advised to select NCMC.
  • Please make sure the card is in active status.
  • Branch may activate the NCMC wallet using the menu HDCMSMNT in CBS. Following steps may be followed by the branch while activating the NCMC wallet.
    • In the menu HDCMSMNT, please select the Function-Contactless/NCMC.
    • In the account number field give full 15 digits account no. attached with the card.
    • In the place of Card Number, please click the searcher and select the correct card number.
    • Please ensure the contactless facility is enabled and select Offline Wallet facility.
  • Once the NCMC wallet is activated, a virtual wallet account will be created for the reconciliation purpose.
  • After completion of these procedures, customer can top up/recharge the NCMC wallet through Net banking or at certified contactless terminal.
  • At certified contactless terminal, customer can recharge the NCMC wallet through cash or through transfer from account using the NCMC Debit Card.

For Customers/Card holders-

  • Please ensure that the Debit Card you are using is RuPay NCMC Card, which is enabled with contactless and offline wallet feature. In case you are not having RuPay NCMC Card, same can be applied through online Net Banking/Mobile Banking or by visiting the account maintaining branch.
  • Please ensure your card is in active status and you may enable the NCMC wallet option through account maintaining branch or through Net banking/Mobile Banking.
  • Once the NCMC option is enabled then offline wallet will be created and now you may top up/recharge the wallet to avail the NCMC feature of your debit card.
  • Required customization to be done at NCMC terminal initially to use the card. For Eg: for utilizing the NCMC feature in Chennai Metro for offline payments, Chennai metro will incorporate required customization in the card for enabling the card to use in all entry and exit point of the Metro stations, where balance will be deducted from the offline wallet for ticket money.
  • Top up/Recharge of NCMC wallet can be done by cash at certified contactless terminal or through account transfer option by debiting the funds from your Debit Card.
  • Top up/Recharge of NCMC wallet can be done by transfer mode from operative account through Net Banking. Please login to your Internet Banking and go to IOB Cards->NCMC TopUp. BALANCE UPDATION transaction to be done at NCMC terminals, for reflecting the balance in the concerned service.
  • After Top Up/recharge your wallet, the card is ready to use at certified contactless terminal for both contact and contactless transaction.
